To help you understand a bit more about employment with AGT we have posted some of our most frequently asked questions below. If you do not find the answer to your query here, please don't hesitate to contact us.
IS AGT AN EMPLOYMENT AGENCY OR PART OF A GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENT?
AUTOMOTIVE GROUP TRAINING (NSW) commenced business in February 1982 as a "not for profit", private, and industry specific group training company. AGT is not an employment agency nor part of any government organisation.
WHAT IS A GROUP TRAINING COMPANY?
A group training company is a business that employs apprentices/trainees, and then places them with one or more host trainers (workshops) to undergo their trade training.
HOW MUCH WILL YOU CHARGE ME FOR DOING ALL OF THESE THINGS ON MY BEHALF?
Nothing.
DOES AGT ONLY EMPLOY AUTOMOTIVE MECHANICAL APPRENTICES?
No, AGT employs a wide range of apprentices in the automotive industry. For more information, have a look at the job categories under Job Seekers.
IS THE JOB IN BANKSTOWN WHERE YOUR OFFICE IS?
Bankstown is our head office where all administrative functions are carried out. The workshop where you will work would be located as close as possible to your home depending on availability of vacant positions.
HOW IS IT POSSIBLE THAT AGT IS MY BOSS WHEN IN ACTUAL FACT I AM WORKING AT ANOTHER COMPANY ?
Automotive Group Training (NSW) remains the employer of the apprentice. The apprentice is placed with the host company only for the purpose of training.
IF I ATTEND TAFE ONE DAY A WEEK, WILL I THEN BE PAID FOR FOUR DAYS ONLY?
No! You will be paid for attending TAFE provided you present your attendance card signed by your TAFE teacher to your host employer immediately after having attended TAFE.
DOES AGT PAY FOR ALL TAFE EXPENSES?
Once each year of TAFE is successfully completed, and results have been received, AGT will reimburse an apprentice the TAFE enrolment fee.
WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I AM NOT HAPPY IN THE COMPANY WHERE AGT HAS PLACED ME FOR MY TRAINING?
Your first line of action would be to discuss the situation with the workshop manager or, if this is not possible due to breakdown in communications, contact your AGT Client Services Manager.
DO I HAVE TO REMAIN WITH THE SUPERANNUATION COMPANY WITH WHOM AGT ORIGINALLY PAID MONIES INTO, ON MY BEHALF?
No! Under the legislation, you are permitted to use your choice of super fund. You simply have to complete a "standard choice form" and submit it along with the details of your chosen fund to AGT.
Note: AGT staff are not qualified financial advisors, and therefore cannot offer any advice on the subject of which fund is the best.
HOW LONG IS A STANDARD APPRENTICESHIP?
An Apprenticeship usually takes four years, but it is possible with good marks at TAFE and hard work in the workshop to achieve an early completion.
DO I HAVE TO GO TO TAFE OR ANY OTHER REGISTERED TRAINING ORGANISATION (RTO)?
Yes! Depending on the training you undertake, you will have to attend for either one day per week, or one whole week in every five, for the first three years of your apprenticeship.
WHERE WILL I GO TO TAFE?
The course you are studying, and your home location, will determine which TAFE you attend. Other RTO's have their own specific Training locations.
DO I HAVE TO BUY TOOLS STRAIGHT AWAY?
Under a new Federal Government initiative, most apprenticeship trades will receive an $800 tool voucher after the completion of the probationary period. It is not advisable to purchase tools until this time, however, if you choose to do so, that is entirely up to yourself.
